Pits with Snow Fences
A downwind berm fills the small-scale reservior with a snowdrift. We wondered if a snow fence would add even more, and it did. Wind is from the left in this photo.

This combination, fence upwind, then pit, with berm downwind, gives the biggest drifts in the full-scale world, too (Jairell and Schmidt 1990). Aerial photos below show the real thing, in the fall (left) and after a winter of blizzards (right). Wind is from the upper left in both photos.
