Wind Protection

Examples of Wind Shelter Shapes
Folks have built all kinds of wind shelters--straight fences, winged fences,
V-shaped wedges, semicircles, even circles. We looked at a lot of them, and
then used our small-scale models to learn what could happen in blizzards. The
results showed that semicircles and wedges (90-degree V-shaped) work best for
drift-free wind protection. Semicircles use less material than wedges, but
wedges may be a little easier to build. Both give equal protection for the
same height and width. Straight and circular shelters can cause snowdrift
problems.
Semicircular and V-shaped shelters work best in blizzards (Jairell and Tabler, 1985).
