January 2002

Statewide Summary

Temperatures ranged from 4°F above normal in the northeast to 4°F below normal in the south central part of the state. Precipitation was generally less than 50 percent of normal throughout the state and only 10 percent of normal along I-80 west of Laramie. Snow pack at the end of January was running ahead of last year at this time but only 80 percent of normal in the west and 55 percent of normal in the eastern part of the state. The average temperature in January 2002 was 21.8°F. This was 2.9°F warmer than the 1895-2002 average, the 29th warmest January in 108 years. The temperature trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is 0.1 degree Fahrenheit per decade.

0.89 inches of precipitation fell in January. This was 0.18 inches more than the 1895- 2002 average, the 27th wettest such month on record. The precipitation trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is -0.03 inches per decade.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in January was 27.5°F. This is 1.6°F warmer than the new 1971-2000 (Normals) average and represents the 63rd warmest January on record (since 1895). The maximum temperature for the month was 59°F on the 8th and 26th and the minimum of -11°F occurred on the 2nd. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.17 inch is 38 of normal and is tied for the 23rd driest in 108 years of record keeping. Snowfall totaled 2.7 inches which is 45 percent of the long-term average.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in January was 19.9.°F. This is 0.5°F colder than the new 1971-2000 (Normals) average. The maximum for the month was 53°F on the 26th and the minimum of -30°F occurred on the 2nd (coldest temperature in the US for the day) and is the new low record for the day (old record was -15 F in 1942). Precipitation total of 0.06 inch is 16 percent of normal and represents the 3rd driest January since 1949. Snowfall total was 1.8 inches and is 32 percent of the long-term average.

    Rawlins

    The average temperature in January was 19.3°F. This is -3.7°F colder than the new 1971-2000 (Normals) average. The maximum temperature for the month was 46°F on the 8th (also record high for the day) and the minimum of -15°F occurred on the 1st. Precipitation total of 0.02 inch is 4 percent of normal and represents the 2nd driest January since 1952 (2001 had 0.01 inch for the driest). Snowfall totaled of 1.2 inches and is 15 percent of the long-term average.

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in January was 20.4°F. This is 1.4°F warmer than the new 1971-2000 (Normals) average. The maximum temperature for the month was 46°F on the 8th and the minimum of -10°F occurred on the 30th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.06 inch is 10 percent of normal and represents the 2nd driest January since 1949. Snowfall total was 1.8 inches and is 26 percent of the long-term average.

    Evanston

    The average temperature in January was 18.4°F. This is -1.0°F colder than the new 1971-2000 (Normals) average. The maximum temperature for the month was 42°F on the 8th and the minimum of -12°F occurred on the 30th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.06 inch is 9 percent of normal and represents the 6th driest (tied) January since 1899. Snowfall totaled 2.1 inches and is 20 percent of the long-term average.

    Lander

    The average temperature in January was 21.9°F. This is 1.6°F warmer than the new 1971-2000 (Normals) average. The maximum temperature for the month was 54°F on the 8th (record high for the day as well) and the minimum of -9°F occurred on the 30th. Precipitation total of 0.28 inch is 54 percent of normal and represents the 21th driest January since 1949. Snowfall totaled 7.5 inches and is 84 percent of the long-term average.

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in January was 25.6°F. This is 4.3°F warmer than average. The maximum temperature for the month was 69°F on the 8th and the minimum of -12°F occurred on the 30th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.17 inch is 22 percent of normal and represents the 5th driest January since 1949. Snowfall totaled 4.7 inch and is 41 percent of the long-term average.

    Casper

    The average temperature in January was 22.2°F. This is 1.4°F warmer than the new 1971-2000 (Normals) average. The maximum temperature for the month was 54°F on the 8th and the minimum of -4°F occurred on the 29th. Record high temperatures occurred on the 7th (52°F) and on the 8th (54°F). Precipitation total of 0.04 inch is 7 percent of normal and represents the 2nd driest January since 1949. Snowfall totaled of 1.4 inches and is 13 percent of the long-term average and also is the 2nd lowest total since 1949.
