Statewide Summary

The average temperature in October 2002 was 38.0°F. This was -5.4°F cooler than the 1895-2002 average, the 6th coolest October in 108 years. The temperature trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is 0.1 degrees Fahrenheit per decade.

0.65 inches of precipitation fell in October. This was 0.36 inch less than the 1895-2002 average, the 30th driest such month on record. The precipitation trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is -0.01 inch per decade.

October temperatures generally ranged from 3°F below normal at Evanston to 8°F below normal at Worland. Precipitation ranged from 200 percent of normal in Big Piney to 52 percent of normal in Casper. (See MAP) for 2-31 October percentages from normal. The statewide drought continues basically unchanged from last month despite well above normal snowfall.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in October was 39.1°F. This is 6.2°F cooler than normal are represents the 4th coldest October since records began in 1895. The maximum for the month was 73 °F on the 10th and the minimum of 8°F occurred on the 30th. Precipitation total of 1.07 inches is 143 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 8.2 inches which is 216 percent of the long term average.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in October was 36.5°F. This is 5.4°F cooler than normal. The maximum for the month was 68°F on the 10th and the minimum of -3°F occurred on the 31st. Precipitation total of 0.56 inch is 70 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 5.9 inches which is 163 percent of the long term average.

    Rawlins

    The average temperature in October was 38.1°F. This is 7.5°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 68°F on the 10th and the minimum of -3°F occurred on the 31st. Precipitation total of 0.97 inch is 113 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 5.1 inches which is 148 percent of normal.

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in October was 39.7°F. This is 3.8°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 68°F on the 10th and the minimum of 8°F occurred on the 30th. Precipitation total of 0.69 inch is 79 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 1.9 inches which is 47 percent of the long term average.

    Evanston

    The average temperature in October was 39.8°F. This is 2.7°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 66°F on the 10th and the minimum of 10°F occurred on the 30th. Precipitation total of 1.31 inches is 114 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 12.9 inches which is 194 percent of the long term average.

    Big Piney

    The average temperature in October was 34.7°F. This is 3.5°Fcooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 66°F on the 7th and the minimum of 6°F occurred on the 31st. Precipitation total of 1.18 inches is 200 percent of normal which represents the 5th wettest October since 1948. Snowfall totaled 10.9 inches which is 419 percent of the long term average.

    Lander

    The average temperature in October was 39.4°F. This is 7.0°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 72°F on the 10 and the minimum of -1°F occurred on the 30th. Precipitation total of 1.72 inches is 126 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 23.4 inches which is 258 percent of the long term average (6th snowiest October since 1948).

    Riverton

    The average temperature in October was 38.7°F. This is 6.1°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 71°F on the 7th and the minimum of 2°F occurred on the 30th. Precipitation total of 1.13 inches is 58 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 16.1 inches which is 503 percent of the long term average (5th snowiest October since 1917).

    Worland

    The average temperature in October was 40.2°F. This is 8.3°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 76°F on the 10th, and the minimum of 9°F occurred on the 30th. Precipitation total of 0.53 inch is 88 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 4.3 inches which is 207 percent of the long term average.

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in October was 37.9°F. This is 7.2°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 74°F on the 10th and the minimum of 3°F occurred on the 31st. Precipitation total of 1.36 inches is 96 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 8.1 inches which is 172 percent of the long term average.

    Casper

    The average temperature in October was 38.2°F and is 7.5°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 73°F on the 10th and the minimum of 9°F occurred on the 30th. A record low temperature of 12°F was set on the 27th. Precipitation total of 0.59 inch is 52 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 7.8 inches which is 126 percent of the long term average.

    The average temperature in October was 41.7°F and is 5.9°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 80°F on the 10th and the minimum of 11°F occurred on the 30th.
