Wyoming Monthly Climatology
October 2003
Statewide Summary
Temperatures for the month of October were well above normal over most of Wyoming. Average temperatures ranged from
1 degrees above normal in Worland to 8 degrees above normal
in Park County. Precipitation for the month of October was well below normal. The heaviest
moisture occurred across NE to south central WY
(>150 percent) and in SE Fremont county with amounts <5 percent of normal over parts of Carbon, Unita, Lincoln, and Sublette counties.
Soil moisture showed the driest areas remaining in
SW Wyoming with expansion of below normal soil moisture across all of Wyoming. At Torrington in eastern Wyoming,
soil moisture, at all levels, has continued to slowly
decrease during the month. The drought over Wyoming has deepened during
October as a result of warmer and drier conditions.
Cheyenne
The average temperature in October was 51.3°F. This is 4.0°F above normal.
The maximum temperature for the month was 81°F on the 19th and 22nd (record for the day). Other record highs were set on the 10th
(80°F - tied), 18th (80°F - tied), and 23rd (79°F). The minimum of 15°F occurred on the 30th and 31st.
Precipitation total of 0.23 inch is 31 percent of normal. A total of 2.0 inches of snow fell during the month
and is 49 percent of normal.

Laramie
The average temperature in October was 45.8°F. This is 3.9°F warmer than normal.
The maximum temperature for the month was 78°F on the 22nd (record for the day). Other record highs occurred on the
17th (73°F - tied), 18th (75°F - tied), 19th (76°F), 21st (74°F), and 23rd (73°F - tied).
The minimum for the month was 11°F occurring on the 25th. Precipitation total of 0.46 inch is 58 percent of normal.
Snowfall totaled 3.9 inches and is 105 percent of the long term average.
Rawlins
The average temperature in October was 47.6°F. This is 2.1°F warmer than normal.
The maximum temperature for the month was 77°F on the 9th (record for the day). Other record highs occurred on the
17th (72°F), 18th ((74°F), 19th ((75°F), 20th ((72°F), 21st (75°F), 22nd (76°F), and 23rd (73°F).
The minimum for the month was 13°F on the 25th, 30th, and 31st. Precipitation total of 0.21 inches is
24 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 3.9 inches and is 115 percent of the long term average.
Rock Springs
The average temperature in October was 50.0°F. This is 6.5°F warmer than normal.
The maximum temperature for the month was 79°F on the 9th (record for the day). Other record highs occurred on the
19th ((74°F) - tied, and 23rd (73°F - tied). The minimum of 12°F occurred on the 31st.
Precipitation total of 0.28 inch is 32 percent of normal. Snowfall totalled 2.5 inches and is 66 percent of
the long term average.
Evanston
The average temperature in October was 49.2°F. This is 6.8°F warmer than normal.
The maximum temperature for the month was 77°F on the 22nd (record for the day). Other record highs occurred on the
9th (76°F), 20th (74°F - tied), and 21st (75°F). The minimum of 12°F occurred on the 31st.
Precipitation total of 0.29 inch is 25 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 4.8 inches and is 155 percent of
the long term average.
Big Piney
The average temperature in October was 43.53°F. This is 5.3°F warmer than normal.
The maximum temperature for the month was 76°F on the 21st (record for the day). Other record highs occurred on the
18th (72°F - tied), 20th (72°F), and 23rd (73°F). The minimum of 9°F occurred on the 31st.
Precipitation total of 0.13 inch is 22 percent of normal. Snowfal totaled 2.6 inches and is 124 percent of
the long term average.
Lander
The average temperature in October was 50.4°F. This is 4.0°F warmeer than normal and is
tied for the 8th warmest October since 1892. The maximum temperature for the month was 82°F
on the 21st (record for the day). Other record highs occurred on the 9th (81°F), 22nd (75°F), and 23rd (76°F).
The minimum for the month of 13°F occurred on the 30th. Precipitation total of 0.91 inch is 66 percent of normal.
Snowfall totalled 18.5 inches and represents 199 percent of the long term average but is only the 9th highest October total
since 1948.

Riverton
The average temperature in October was 49.6°F. This is 4.8°F warmer than normal.
The maximum temperature for the month was 82°F on the 9th (record for the day - tied). Another record high were broken
on the 21st (78°F). The minimum for the month of 11°F occurred on the 30th.
Precipitation total of 0.25 inch is 31 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 12.1 inches and is 366 percent of
the long term average and is the 6th highest October total since 1918.
Worland
The average temperature in October was 49.1°F. This is 0.6°F warmer than normal.
The maximum temperature for the month was 85°F on the 19th (record for the day). Other record highs were broken
on the 19th (85°F), 21st (82°F), and 22nd (84°F - tied). The minimum for the month of 16°F occurred
on the 31th. Precipitation total of 0.31 inch is 52 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 4.0 inches and is 366 percent of
the long term average and is tied for 8tyh greatest October amount since 1915.
Sheridan
The average temperature in October was 50.8°F. This is 5.7°F warmer than normal.
The maximum temperature for the month was 89°F on the 19th (record for the day). Other record highs occurred on the
9th (872°F), 17th (88°F), 18th (85°F), 20th (78°F - tied), 21st (84°F), and 22nd (84°F).
The minimum for the month of 9°F occurred on the 31st. Precipitation total of 0.49 inch is 35 percent of normal.
Snowfall totaled 5.0 inches and is 106 percent of the long term average.

Casper
The average temperature in October was 49.0°F. This is 3.3°F warmer than normal
(18th warmest October since 1940). The maximum temperature for the month was 83°F on the 9th (record for the day).
Other record highs occurred on the 8th (78°F - tied), 17th (79°F), 18th (78°F), 19th (79°F),
20th (77°F - tied), 22nd (80°F), and 23rd (81°F) which is also the latest +80°F temperature achieved.
The minimum for the month of 11°F occurred on the 31st. Precipitation total of 0.60 inch is 53 percent of normal
(26th driest on record since 1940). Snowfall totalled 21.0 inches and is 339 percent of the long term average and ranks as
the 2nd most October snowfall since 1948.

Torrington
The average temperature in October was 52.4°F. This is 4.8°F warmer than normal.
The maximum temperature for the month was 90°F on the 9th (record for the day). Othe record highs occurred
on the 22nd (84°F - tied) and 23rd (88°F). The minimum for the month of 19°F occurred on the 31st.
Precipitation total of 0.28 inch is 29 percent of normal. Snowfall totalled 4.6 inches and is 288 percent of
the long term average.
