Wyoming Monthly Climatology
August 2004

Statewide Summary

Wyoming, August 2004 on average experienced cooler and significantly wetter or drier conditions depending on where you live. Average temperatures ranged from near normal over portions of Sublette and Teton Counties to well below normal temperatures over portions of Platte and Goshen Counties. Precipitation was much below normal north of a line from SE to NW Wyoming and much above normal from south central and western Wyoming. Soil moisture at the end of August was normal over all but the extreme eastern and northeast regions of the state. Dryness over the eastern plains was clearly reflected in Torrington's soil moisture profile. The only drought regions that have improved since last month are over the southern extremes of the North Platte River Basin and over northwest Wyoming. (drought monitor).

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, August 6, temperatures were above normal. Temperatures ranged from 1.1 degrees above normal in Worland to 5.8 degrees above normal in Kaycee. The highest temperature was 99 degrees in Kaycee, while the lowest temperature was 39 degrees in Big Piney. A trace or more of precipitation was reported at most stations with most stations reporting below normal amounts. The most precipitation fell in Archer with 0.61 inch, Recluse with 0.52 inch, and Sundance with 0.44 inch.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, August 13, temperatures were below normal except in the western part of the State. Temperatures ranged from 9.0 degrees below normal in Gillette to 2.9 degrees above normal in Uinta. The highest temperature was 97 degrees in Torrington, while the lowest temperature was 33 degrees in Afton, Big Piney, and Laramie. Some record overnight lows were set. Only light precipitation was reported in the eastern part of the state. The most precipitation fell in Newcastle with 0.17 inch and Gillette with 0.13 inch.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, August 20, temperatures were below normal except in some western areas. Temperatures ranged from 6.8 degrees below normal in Recluse to 4.9 degrees above normal in Jackson. The highest temperature was 92 degrees in Torrington, while the lowest temperature was 37 degrees in Recluse. Precipitation was scattered with above normal amounts in western and south central areas. The Big Horn Basin and Northeast received very little precipitation. The most precipitation fell in Lander with 2.25 inches and Laramie with 0.86 inch.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, August 27, below normal temperatures were seen across the State. Temperatures ranged from 1.3 degrees below normal in Jackson to 7.7 degrees below normal in Worland. The highest temperature was 91 degrees in Torrington and Recluse, while the lowest temperature was 30 degrees in Recluse and Big Piney. Precipitation was widespread with most areas receiving some moisture except in some central and northern areas. Recluse was the only station who received no precipitation. The most precipitation fell in Saratoga with 1.50 inches and Jackson with 1.43 inch.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in August was 65.1°F. This is 0.8°F below normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 92°F on the 1st and the minimum of 40°F occurred on the 28th. There was only one day in which the temperature reached 90°F. Since 1915, Cheyenne's total monthly August 90-degree days vary from zero to 13 days:

    Laramie

    The average temperature in August was 58.6°F. This is 3.1°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 84°F on the 1st and 2nd and the minimum for the month was 33°F occurring on the 12th (record for the day). Precipitation total of 1.77 inches is 144 percent of normal.

    Rawlins

    The average temperature in August was 62.3°F. This is 4.2°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 87°F on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th and the minimum for the month was 35°F occurring on the 28th. Precipitation total of 1.10 inches is 136 percent of normal.

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in August was 64.3°F. This is 0.9°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 89°F on the 15th and the minimum for the month was 36°F occurring on the 27th. Precipitation total of 0.91 inch is 157 percent of normal.

    Evanston

    The average temperature in August was 61.6°F. This is 0.2°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 85°F on the 10th and 15th and the minimum for the month was 34°F occurring on the 27th. Precipitation total of 0.92 inch is 98 percent of normal.

    Big Piney

    The average temperature in August was 57.5°F. This is 0.6°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 85°F on the 13th and the minimum for the month was 29°F occurring on the 28th. Precipitation total of 1.29 inches is 161 percent of normal.

    Lander

    The average temperature in August was 66.2°F. This is 3.2°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 92°F on the 5th and the minimum for the month was 40°F occurring on the 28th. Precipitation total of 2.38 inches is 418 percent of normal and represents the wettest August since 1948. A record daily total of 2.20 inches fell on the 18th.

    Riverton

    The average temperature in August was 66.7°F. This is 1.5°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 94°F on the 1st and the minimum for the month of 43°F occurred on the 28th. Precipitation total of 0.77 inch is 157 percent of normal.

    Worland

    The average temperature in August was 66.6°F. This is 5.3°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 95°F on the 1st and 2nd and the minimum for the month of 39°F occurred on the 24th and 28th. Precipitation total of 0.13 inch is 21 percent of normal which is tied 6th driest August since 1960.

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in August was 65.7°F. This is 2.5°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 96°F on the 1st and the minimum for the month of 39°F occurred on the 11th. Precipitation total of 0.56 inch is 70 percent of normal.

    Casper

    The average temperature in August was 64.6°F. This is 4.0°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 94°F on the 1st and the minimum for the month of 34°F occurred on the 28th. Precipitation total of 0.44 inch is 60 percent of normal.

    Douglas

    The average temperature in August was 65.5°F. This is 3.3°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 97°F on the 1st and the minimum for the month of 34°F occurred on the 28th. Precipitation total of 0.55 inch is 60 percent of normal.

    Torrington

    The average temperature in August was 68.3°F. This is 1.9°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 98°F on the 1st and the minimum for the month of 36°F occurred on the 28th. Precipitation total of 0.38 inch is 32 percent of normal.
